Books, Books, Books

A couple of weeks ago I read Lock and Key By Sarah Dessen and i decided to review it. I have heard a lot about Sarah Dessen in terms of her books many people like them so I thought I would give this one a shot. I hate to say it but I was slightly disappointed it was a good book don't get me wrong but what was written in over 420 pages could have been written in 200 or less. A lot of it was dragged out and at times it took forever for anything even remotely climactic to happen.

In essence this book is about a teenage girl named Ruby who was living in a house with her alcoholic and drug addict mom who one day just disappeared and never came back. Ruby was very self sufficient though and she thought she could take care of herself. Then her electricity and water stopped because she hadn't been able to pay the bills. Ruby still believed she was doing fine by herself but one day her nosy land lords came over to check in and saw piled up dishes, clothes hung everywhere, and the house smelled so they called child services. Long story short she starts to live with her lawyer sister Cora and husband Jaime who created and owns a company called UMe which is essentially Facebook. She is not happy because she thinks she could take care of herself so her mentality is I turn 18 in a few months and then can move out and take care of myself.

Moving along Ruby rebels and gets drunk with her old school friends and then is later saved by her neighbor Nate who she met when she tried running away before. Nate's dad owns a company which I forgot the name but they basically do peoples chores for them like walk the dog, pick up dry cleaning and things like that. It is only Nate and his dad who run the business so his dad is kind of a hard ass and abuses him at times.

After Ruby comes home drunk Jaime is upset with her because him and Cora are really giving her everything. Cora compares Ruby's behavior to how their mom used to act. After hearing this Ruby becomes more thankful and shapes up. She gets a job at the mall and her and Nate start seeing each other. Ruby can hear and sometimes tell that Nate is being abused but he always brushes her off and never tries to help himself.

Ruby resents Cora for leaving her with their mom, but she explains that she always tried finding her but their mom kept moving them and changing the phone number so she could never get in contact. Cora tried inviting Ruby to her wedding but she gave their mom the invitation and promised she would let Ruby decide if she wanted to go but she never did. It was concluded that Ruby's mom left because she did not want to be alone once Ruby left for college (mom of the year I know).

I don't want to explain the whole book just in case any of you would like to read it. But essentially Ruby finds out her mom is in rehab, Nate moves to Arizona, and Ruby gets accepted to college. A lot of semi interesting things happen in between so if you are patient I recommend reading this book!
